Arts in Education

Lori has worked in school settings for many years as an independent artist, providing art and wellness programs to teachers and students.

She has also worked with organizations such as Future Leaders Network, Earth Spirit: Nature Education Program, The ArtsCenter at Dave Poulin Studios, and The Arts Council of Chautauqua County to provide a variety of creative educational programs.

Creative Wisdom for Children

Creative Wisdom for children is about creating enriching opportunities for young people to explore who they are and learn about the world around them. Such programming can enhance communication, team-building abilities, and social & problem-solving skills.

Art can build on concepts learned in English, Math, History and Science.
Art for wellness can also help students express their thoughts and feelings, work through cultural issues (such as war or global warming) and reduce feelings of isolation and fear.

Arts Programming

Below are some examples of programs Lori has offered.

Bark Paintings (Social studies/geography/art/science)
Focuses on the history and culture of the Australian Aborigines. Students study the animals indigenous to Australia, then make their own Aboriginal Bark Painting.
Labyrinths and Mazes (Math/history/art)
Students learn about the history of labyrinths and mazes, their similarities & differences. They then create their own mazes and labyrinths in small and large versions. Encourages problem solving and teamwork as students learn to measure circuits and then build one together.
The Rabbit Dance (History, social studies)
Focuses on Native American concepts and appreciation of nature. After listening to a story, students learn a circle dance, the Wolf Clan Song and create a medicine shield. Incorporates discussion on the cultural importance of story telling, gratitude and our intricate connections with animals and nature.
The Breathworks (Science/health/art)
Students learn about our bodies & how we breathe, create a model of a lung, and make belly stones for relaxation.
Partnership Paintings
Each child creates a painting on ceiling tiles that represents his/her idea of a chosen social issue (such as peace or compassion). Once the paintings are done, they fit together to create a large wall mural for display. Emphasizes individual responsibility combined with teamwork, and commitment to a large group.

Lori's program "Art and Me" helped students learn about relaxation and healthy coping skills. The art work engaged students and they were able to demonstrate what they learned. Several students used their relaxation skills before taking our standardized tests without prompting. The program was a success. Lori is highly skilled and a valuable resource.
