Class Description

This course provides an overview of the use of art/creativity as a tool for healing/health, personal and professional development, community building and self-expression. We will explore how a variety of art forms have been integrated in cultures for the wellbeing of individuals and community in both historical and contemporary settings. Discussions will explore theories and research about “how and why”  creativity impacts us. The course will emphasize the universal and natural tendency to create and how that relates to multiple disciplines and life issues. The focus will be on self-utilization of methods to engage in the creative arts both for deepening your own self-awareness and for extending compassion and human caring to others.   HANDS ON ART EXPERIENCES will be included in class time.  No art experience necessary.

Activity: Creative Self Drawings

Each of us has a creative self inside. This creative self is part of being human and yearns for expression. Finding a small way to access this part of our mind and body can help us on many levels.

This is a practice I use in my classes and in my own journals. It can be a short activity -- something you can do daily for 15 minutes. Or you can work on it only when needed. Spend as much time as you like on this activity, and use whatever art supplies you like.

Step I (3-5 mins)
Spend a few minutes relaxing & calming your body. Find a quiet and comfortable space to be with a sketch book or journal and a pencil or some crayons or pastels. Do some deep breathing, light meditation, yoga or listen to some soft music. Let yourself relax.

Step II (2-3 mins)
Suggest to yourself that you are here to listen to your creative self, to get to know it better or just to witness how it feels today. What mood is your creative self in today? Allow whatever images want to come into your imagination -- do not judge them or try to change them. Accept them and trust what you see. As you get more comfortable with this process it gets easier.

Step III (10-15 minutes, or longer)
Now draw whatever you see/imagine/sense. Some people access information by "doing" or "moving," so you may need to just start drawing and be guided as you go. If you sense or receive words, write those down also -- don't worry if you don't know what they mean. Images may be as simple as drawing a yellow triangle, or may be elaborate sketches.  Just be gentle and loving towards whatever images you create. Date your creative self drawing when you finish.
